PGWP: what it means for students

Post-graduation work permit. What it means, who decides it and where to check the official source.

A PGWP is an open work permit some graduates can apply for after finishing a program; IRCC decides who qualifies and on what terms.

In more detail

A post-graduation work permit lets certain graduates of Canadian schools work in Canada after their studies. It is a separate application made after the program, not something granted automatically with the study permit.

Whether a graduate can apply depends on factors set by IRCC, which can include the type of program, the school, and other conditions that change from time to time. For that reason, a program name or a brochure line is never enough to rely on.

If post-study work matters to your plans, make it a question for the official source before you choose a program, and keep any written confirmation you obtain.

Who decides

IRCC decides the rules and each individual application.

Where to check

What to ask a counsellor

  • Where do I check the current PGWP rules, and how should I record what I found for each program I compare?
  • Which questions should I put to the school's international office about work permits?
